How to Shop Less and Save More
Nov 14, 2022 11:10PM ● By Kemi AjibareIf there’s one thing that COVID has done for most of us, it has definitely opened our eyes to how much we actually have in our closet. When things began to reopen, a lot of people were asking this very question: “What am I going to wear?”
As a stylist, that question can be so layered, but it’s less about what you are wearing and more about what you aren’t wearing. So, here are four tips I’m sharing on how to “Shop Less and Save More.”
1. Go through what you already own.
Have you ever gone to the mall to buy something you “thought” you didn’t have? If this is you, you may need a “Closet Edit.” This means you take everything out of your closet, go through each item, and sort through what you currently have and what you no longer want or need.
2. Do you have the basics?
So now that you’ve taken everything out of your closet - great, but now you realize all you have are statement pieces that you only wear occasionally. If this is you, it’s because you probably lack the basic pieces that are building blocks to creating an everyday outfit!
So when I say basics, I’m talking about:
- A basic white t-shirt
- Plain simple jeans
- Simple flats
- A Blazer
3. Shop smarter.
What does it mean to be a smart shopper? It means investing now, so you don’t have to invest later. Stop spending on trendy pieces and invest in “longevity.” For example, instead of buying a pair of jeans for $10 every three months, how about you spend a little more to have items for years to come.
4. Work with what you have.
Okay, so maybe you actually do have items in
your closet, but you just don’t know how to wear them. One of my biggest tips
for this is to find inspiration. Pinterest is a great place to begin. For
example, if I’m looking for how to style skinny jeans, I simply search the
term, and a list of curated images comes up with different style ideas on how
to wear them.
