The Howard County Library always hits it out of the park with their picks, and May doesn't disappoint!
The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan - This book is a highly readable reminder that not all the WWII effort took place on the continent and upon the seas, amid spies and battles. The convenient machinations of a cooking contest using war rations bring four women together in England's countryside to share their troubles and triumphs. Recommended by Kristen Blount, Senior Graphic Designer
Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land - Journalist Stephanie Land details the hardships and trials she endured during her daughter's first years. Driven into homelessness due in part to an abusive partner, an abusive father, and an absent mother, Land works as a maid cleaning houses to make ends meet. Recommended by Kimberly Johanson, Instructor and Research Specialist
The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan-This slightly dystopian page turner has Sci-fi elements reminiscent of The Handmaid’s Tale. A disturbing and compelling debut, that touches on class, race, and the complicated relationship society has with motherhood. Perfect for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale and Klara and the Sun. Recommended by Wendy Camassar, Instructor and Research Specialist
